Are you thinking of adopting a Beagle? These dogs can be a great choice, especially if you live in the country!
Here are some things to think about in your search for a new Beagle dog.
Beagle
Like Snoopy, these are typically small dogs who are very active companions for the entire family. Because they are a scent hound, they can be stubborn and you may need to be creative with your training and socialization because they can run off at a moment’s notice if they catch the scent of something intriguing.
History
Beagles were originally bred to track small game and they are still used for this purpose in countries all around the world. They first became popular in England in the 12th century and, then, in the 1700s they were used for fox hunting. But Beagles don’t need to hunt to be a great companion!
Training and Socialization
It has been said –- although this may not be your experience –- that Beagles can be difficult to housetrain and that it can take up to as much as a year to get it right. Because these chow hounds love nothing better than a full food bowl, you will want to teach your children to respect your Beagle when he’s eating. They can be very territorial.
Grooming
The most common color for a Beagle is the tricolor that includes a black saddle across his back, white legs and chest and white tip on the tail.
They can be inclined to ear infections because they have long floppy ears so you need to make sure to check them regularly. Remove tartar build up on his teeth by brushing and also trim his nails twice a month.
Health
Just like any other breed, the Beagle is susceptible to certain diseases. One of the most important health concerns to be aware of is something called into vertebral disc disease. This happens when the inner layer of a desk protrudes into the spinal canal and pushes against the spinal cord. This disease can cause everything from neck are back pain or even paralysis. They are also prone to hip dysplasia and glaucoma.
Are Beagles Good with Kids?
Beagles are in love with kids. The thing you need to be aware of, is that a Beagle’s nature is to be rambunctious and you may want to supervise when she’s playing with young kids.
Every dog is a pack animal and Beagles are no exception. They love to be around families and other pets.
Sadly, one of the most common reasons Beagles are surrendered to shelters and rescue groups is because they have a tendency to bay instead of bark. If you live in the country and have some wide open acreage, a Beagle would be a perfect addition.
