Home Remedies for Pets

What can I give my dog for arthritis?

Homemade dog food for arthritis and joint problems may be one solution to help with the pain your dog may be suffering.
Dogs Arthritis is an incredibly painful ailment.  With dog arthritis comes inflammation of the joints, as well as stiffness that limits mobility. Many dogs often suffer from arthritis, either through hereditary traits or just older age. Arthritis in dogs may cause them to not be able or willing to get up even to eat or go to the bathroom.

Your veterinarian may have prescribed dog arthritis pain relief or you can purchase some dog arthritis pain relief over the counter medications to help. However, your dog’s diet may also need a little attention. Below is a homemade dog food recipe that will help dogs with arthritis thanks to the inclusion of alfalfa powder, which is very helpful at naturally treating arthritis. The process may take a good day to complete, so plan ahead.

Ingredients

1 pound of white turkey meat (cooked thoroughly, and doing this in a slow cooker does the trick)
1 pound extra lean ground beef
½ cup cooked brown rice
1 cup of oats
Warm water for the oats
½ cup raw carrots, sliced
½ cup kale
½ cup celery
½ cup cottage cheese
½ cup frozen mixed vegetables, such as peas, broccoli and green beans
1 teaspoon alfalfa powder
A pinch of parsley
1 capsule of flax seed oil
3 tablespoons unsalted beef broth

Directions

If you need to cook your white turkey meat, simply place it in a slow cooker with water to cover it on low for six to seven hours, or until it measures 145⁰ – 147⁰F. Once it is cooked, remove it and allow it to rest. After it has cooled, chop it up into bite sized pieces and place them into a large mixing bowl.

Brown the ground beef and cook the brown rice. Drain the grease from the beef and mix in the cooked rice. Set aside.

In a blender, mix the vegetables with alfalfa powder. Set this aside, as you will not necessarily be using all of this juiced mixture at one time.

In a small bowl, mix the oats and warm water. Add enough water just to moisten the oats well. Add this mixture to the turkey and mix it up in order to coat all of the turkey pieces. Add in the unsalted beef broth, and mix it all up again.

Add the ground beef and rice mixture to the bowl of turkey, oats and broth and mix well. Measure out ½ cup of the vegetable blend you created earlier and add it and the parsley to the meat mixture. Combine all the ingredients very well.

Measure out a normal portion for your dog and serve.

You may store the remaining vegetable juice blend in an airtight container in your refrigerator. This may be used for the next round of homemade dog food that you prepare.
