Recycle Your Christmas Tree By Feeding It To Goats

Now that Christmas is behind us, we’ll be taking down our decorations any day now — this includes our majestic and beautiful trees. Isn’t it a bit depressing to see real trees laying on the side of the street, just waiting to be picked up and tossed in the garbage? We think so, which is why we were so thrilled to find out that goats LOVE Christmas trees. Read on….

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, starting this Friday, the good folks in Reno, Nevada are being encouraged to donate their trees to the Truckee Meadows fire station in Washoe Valley, where they will be given to goats! The lucky goats are next door at a herding business called Goat Grazers. “A lot of people are chipping (trees), and we’re thinking there needs to be another outlet,”  Vince Thomas, firefighter and herder said. “Christmas trees are great for campfire, and we’re thinking about cutting them into smaller pieces and using them for firewood or chipping them.”

As for the goats, there are 40 of them, and they really do enjoy a good Christmas tree Thomas said.  “They’ll eat the pine needles and leave the skeleton of the tree. It basically looks like Charlie Brown’s Christmas with a scrawny tree that has nothing but the branches.”

Apparently, the pines are good for the goats’ digestive systems, and pine is incredible high in Vitamin C. So, basically, it’s a win/win situation for everyone!
